This is my guess. They asked him his favorite political philosopher and he didn't have a clue what to answer in other words he doesn't know any political philosophers. He probably thought he was very smart for coming with Jesus Christ so he didn't have to look totally clueless again as when he got questioned about foreign leaders.Jesus Christ is a far better answer than huh? What now?I don't get it and it scores probably well with the christian coalition. For me the name of Jesus was used here in vain for political gain because any politician is or should be aware that the core Christian values, those you mention but also love your neighbor and your enemy are not a realistic way to lead a country and certainly not the United States
He clearly didn't think this through before opening his mouth, what a surprise.

Because the sheep (that's how the flock refer to themselves) that follow main stream religions...as well as the non main stream I guess; use the religious teachings they follow to try to force others to believe as they do. It has been this way since the beginnings of organized religion.
The more followers, the more political impact they have to control society.
You can see a classic example of that by looking at what the radical Muslims have done ---they control many governments and are bent on converting the world.
The Christians as well as other religions are also working toward those ends.
What they have done since recorded history is make war.....kill non believers......subjugate entire societies.
The quest for power by religions is a never ending war carried out against the common people of the world.
It is my belief that the big revolution - yet to come- will be when the common people will rebel against the "churches" of this world and make it imposable to gain especially political power in any country. (the American constitution was supposed to keep this from happening but the Bush government is violating this tenant.)
The last five years is a good example of how far off the beaten path of moral and ethical behavior the US government was turned by a religious zealot running the show.

you're purely getting your self ideal right into a pissing contest. Time to enable bypass of the gangster mentality. the two activities are working as a team to break the country. Whom ever comes after BHO, will proceed the ball rolling, purely like Bush persisted Clinton's stride. end being a lemming, and attempt to have an unique concept. there is the region the venture is, no person thinks for themselves any further.

The key to this is Bush still thinks Jesus was the philosophy professor at Yale, that gave him a A even though he never showed up for class.

He was pimping "God" and "faith" to get the Bible-belt vote of course.
Also, he doesn't have the intellect to even know of any philosophers so Jesus was an easy answer.

Because he knows that a good portion of his base doesn't care what he does as long as he invokes the name of Jesus enough times.

Bush also said: "According to Abbas, Bush said: 'God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East." If Bush were a homeless person babbling like that, he'd be in a loony bin.

It also says that slavery is acceptable and you shouldn't wear clothing made of more than one thread.
The Bible is not a literal text.
It's funny, though, how he chooses to cite things such as homosexuality in the Bible, yet fails to follow tenets such as "thou shalt not kill."

Happy New Year to you.
He was told to say that..... obviously upon reflection and passing of time during his presidency he has forgotten he was told to say that and quickly reverted to type. I feel real pity for that man, and real sorrow for us.
