lost my home in a fire, lost savings in the market, losing med ins and monthly stipend from employer, want to move from this horrible gov. apt to another state, hope to work part-time at some point but cannot stand or walk all day, anybody know something very specific to do? bad heart problems but face being on the street on my next birthday. rather od and step out. not a religious person. when my house burned i found out how useless things like red cross and the "charities" are. it was a disaster and they were still giving out billions to the people for hurricaine katrina, but as it turns out i am not a minority and help was rejected right and left. i am white and proud and don't look that bad. it is a fourway bypass and diabetes and nurorpathy etc. that they don't see. i located near my brother a couple of years ago and he died. i was okay until the house burned. okay with diabetic problems and then the heart surgery topped off by the fire -- only the clothes i was wearing.

i am getting ss disability already and a co. stipend but without the extra $600 from the co. only have about $1200 per month to live on. except for gov. ghettos, an ordinary apt. is about $700 to $800 per month. i have meds etc, food, gas to do only necessasry things. As peggy lee said, "Is that all there is?" I have never had to live like would it would take the is looks now. Never had to live like that. I not a very religious man and have a lot of pride. Don't think I care to live on the bottom. I worked hard, got an mba on my on, and held a few responsible positions. But the tables turned on me and here I am. I sometimes wish the surgery had't worked out when i was on life support. Hell, i know i would never have known the differnce and my alienate grown kids would get a little insurance to pay off their houses. If this is the terminal point of bipolar, let me out of here. Not quite terminal yet, eh?

Move to a smaller town..(a lot of small towns in the South don't have high rent)...rent would drop a lot and that would help......the other answers you have gotten are right on track...Apply for what you have paid into all those years you were able. Its no shame to do that.....you paid for them and now are in need. You didn't mention what type work you got your degree in nor what type work you did, but you also could contact the Temp Services and see if you could apply there for work.....sounds like that would be a help for you also.

Unfortunately, the mindset of the government today isn't very understanding. I would urge you to apply for medicaid right away. It takes a while to get approved. But before you do, you should know that you are not eligible for medicaid if you have more than $2000 in your bank account. And Social Security will go back as far as six months to be sure you don't drain the account the day before you apply. As for your disability, you will need to have a doctors certification of the disability. And the thing to keep in mind is that disability doesn't mean that you can't do any job. For example a disabled chemist, does not have to take a job as a Walmart greeter to be considered disabled. The term that is used is "not able to perform your regular job or any job for which you are qualified" in terms of education and skill. So if you were a machinist or an engineer, the definition means that you can't do engineering or machinist type of work.

Unfortunately most company disability ends when you reach 65 and you then must go on retirement. If you don't have that, then your only recourse will be to apply for medicaid and welfare. But as I said, you can't have any real financial assets to qualify.

In my opinion, don't be hesitant to apply for all federal aid. You paid taxes when you worked, and your taxes and mine help fund the system. Here's another example of my reasoning.

If the US was invaded, you would expect the US Army to defend the country including yourself and your family. Social Security and Social assistance are no different. Everybody pays taxes and those that can't work to support themselves recieve benefits. When I started working 24 years ago, I never expected to have two strokes. But bad things happen to good people.

Use the system to get medical care and shelter.
