I'm 38 and will be 39 in May. Recently, like within the last 4 days, I've been having what may be hot flashes. You gus tell me what you think: I was sitting eating breakfast w/ my bf on the 29th and I just got really hot-- I almost broke out into a sweat and started feeling clammy. I thought I might be getting sick so I went and laid down. Everything was fine until yesterday. I go hot again last evening and then twice last night I woke up just really hot and feeling like I was about to break a sweat. My mom did not go through menopause b/c she had a hysterectomy when she was younger, so I don't know if I'm prone to early menopause? What could be going on with me? Please let me know if you need more details and I'll be glad to add details to the question. Thanks!

You probably have a hormone imbalance, most likely related to your thyroid, At your age, perimenopause is a possibility.
Menopause symptoms are:
* Hot flashes.
* Sleep disturbances (insomnia).
* Emotional changes, such as mood swings or irritability.
* A change in sexual interest or response.
* Problems with concentration and memory that are linked to sleep loss and fluctuating hormones (not a permanent sign of aging).4
* Headaches.
* Rapid, irregular heartbeats (heart palpitations).
* Generalized itching.

You're certainly old enough to be entering perimenopause. Menopause itself (the total cessation of periods for a year or more) averages at age 50.5 or thereabouts, but anything from age 40 on is not really considered early. Perimenopause is a state that can go on for years, though.

Everyone is very different -- for some women they hardly notice menopause at all: periods just get further apart and eventually stop. For others it's years of assorted bizarre and upsetting systems, considerable discomfort, atrophy of genitals, growth of moustache and so on.

Take it as it comes.

Sounds as if early menopause is a possibility. To be sure have your doctor do a blood test that will let you both know what, if any steps can be taken so as to reduce and manage your symptoms.

Could be menopause, could be high blood pressure, could be something else. I'd say if it keeps up go see your doctor and explain the symptoms. She can run a hormone test and see if that's what the problem is. Just remember it could be something else and you should have it checked out if it continues.
