If all ISPs made you use their equipment, it would be pointless to sell that equipment in stores. Earthlink can't track any modems but the ones they provide, which I don't understand. IT professionals have told me that any ISP should be able to supply service to any modem. What am I missing here?

Yes, You are missing something. So are we..

Are you talking about dial-up or high speed cable/dsl?

A few providers track the MAC addresses of modems. They will not allow any unregistered modem on their network.

Some providers will allow you to use your own equipment, however, you must register your modem MAC address with them in order for it to work.

Most companies really frown on this and will caveat their service if you use your own modem. ANY problem you have, connecting, speed, toilet flushing, etc, they are going to blame on the fact that you do not have their modem. They gotcha on this one.

If you have Earthlink High Speed, (DSL) then regular modems won't work. If you are using standard Earthlink, then I can't see why you would need a special modem as this would make their service unavailable to the travelling public using laptops.

If you are using a special modem, you probably have their high speed product, and they may have special software features built-in to the DSL modem.

Not sure why you think Earthlink won't let you use your own modem. I was using Earthlink for several years and had my own modem. Never had a problem. Even if you are using their high speed the modem you use is your choice. The most they should need it the MAC address from it for IP configuration.

If you want to do business with Earthlink, you have to play by their rules.

From a supportability standpoint it's much easier for them to support the equipment that they have specifically approved on their network.

This is very common practice. Although some ISPs may allow you to use your own equipment not all do.

I'm not sure about that one. I've been using Earthlink for years, and have never had to use their equipment to connect.

A Kindle hearth is worth procuring. it somewhat is an surprising media intake gadget, for books, video, music and internet surfing. even yet it somewhat is through no skill a exchange for a working laptop or workstation. those truly are apples and oranges right here. in case you desire what a working laptop or workstation can do, get a working laptop or workstation. in case you only desire something to entertain your self, get a Kindle hearth.

They want more money. They offer "service" at one price. But you have to use their equipment so the total cost is more.
