I'm only testing my motherboard. See, I've got a mediocre computer, so I looked through my garage and I found an old-ish Biostar M7VKQ motherboard with an AMD Athlon processor in it, and I need to test if it still works, but I don't have a case to put it in permanently, so I was planning on plugging the power supply from another computer into the motherboard and putting the motherboard on top of the computer and turning it on just to see if it works, and THEN buying a permanent case for it.

The short answer is yes however to test the power supply you will want everything plugged in to make sure that the power supply can handle all of your hardware. Also if you are testing the mother board you will also need all hardware plugged in to ensure the full function ability of the motherboard.

So the long answer is no without everything else plugged in you will not be able to tell if the mother board or the power supply are working correctly. Just FYI if your power supply beeps when you turn your computer on then it is overloaded and you need a higher rated power supply.

To see if the power supply works, yes, that should work. To test the motherboard, definitely not. You would need at least memory, cpu, and video.

Are you particular that the powersupply is useful sufficient to run your hardware? potential supplys loose their performance slowly with the aid of the years so it somewhat is that the potential furnish grew to become into too at risk of continuously furnish potential to the climate, that ought to be why it grew to become into BSODing. If it have been adverse your motherboard then it somewhat is going to create loads of smoke and the motherboard does no longer artwork in any respect. it ought to additionally be your ram, gpu or harddisks. you should attempt each and each of those aspects in a completely working laptop to slender it down. additionally, in case you examine the BSOD reveal it ought to help inform you what's incorrect in case you google the errors codes.

You can do that, but the couple of lights that you may get on the mobo won't tell you anything meanigful. It certainly won't "test" the board.
