Space Ghost, you have over-estimated my ability. I am not an expert in US foreign policy. But I believe Iraq has been self-sufficient all along - it even survived 10 years of U.N. sanctions after the first Persian Gulf War. To think that Iraq (or any other nations for that matter) cannot be "self-sufficient" without the help from United States is nothing but self-inflated ego and lack of culture. Age wise, America is the great-grandson of the rest of the world. Respect other cultures, be humble, be modest, get some diet, and self-reflect every night before going to bed. If we do this, the rest of the world will eventually start to find us cute and likable.

That depends on two things.

One, will the US leave Iraq in 2007? If not, they cannot be self sufficient. We will continue to meddle and handle their affairs.

Secondly, and more importantly, they will only become self sufficient after their much needed civil war is complete! Iraq is a fractured nation, has been for hundreds of years, and the only way to purge the hatred and jealousy and bickering amongst all the factions, sadly, will be a civil war to settle the borders of a new, multi-national Iraq.

Sadly it won't happen in 2007, even if the fighting stopped today. It takes time to rebuild a nation that suffered this much conflict. (It would have possibly happened already if the insurgency wouldn't have happened. But that fighting needs to die down first, so all the people can come back and discuss things with cooler heads.)

But it will happen.

That would depend entirely upon the method in which it was tested. If the United States abadons its mandate to support and defend its ally, then Iraq will have an extremely difficult time surviving its own inner dissent and exterior manipulation from countries like Iran.

Dont be ridiculous. Of course it wont.
How can it become a self sufficient nation when you have three factions fighting for control who all hate each other.
Not to mention the fact that most people in this counry dont even understand why they hate each other.
Also it doesnt help that we "train" the police and military only to have them defect and join the militias of their religious leaders.
It will probably be another five years minimum before we can leave that country.

By 2011 if every other power withdraws from there right away. The Mesopotamian Civilisation has seen enough wins and losses in the past to get bogged down by the current situation. They will rise again like the proverbial Phoenix!

I'm no expert. Just an opinionated punk.

No, it won't. It probably never will. Iraq never really has been successful at being self-sufficient though. So, it's not entirely our fault. We just made it a lot worse even with Saddam gone.

No, not likely for a few more years/decades. They are heading towards a civil war and they do need to stabilize and get their infrastructure back first.Interestingly, all we seem to hear about are the problems in Baghdad, nowhere else in Iraq.

Considering the fact that Israel still needs 4 billion a year in US aid nearly 60 years after its founding, I doubt that Iraq will ever operate without billions in US handouts.
