I've never seen a Fairy holding this symbol, but lately there is quite a lot of cross-pollination going on between religions as people amalgamate different symbols from different religions into their own personal beliefs. A crescent moon with a star is usually associated with Islam and/or various Islamic or Arabian tribes or nations. The crescent generally symbolizes the new beginning for the Arabian peoples with the advent of Islam, under the authority of God or Allah, symbolized by the star.
A pentagram is quite different, being a five pointed star within a complete circle. A pentagram's major defining trait is usually that its star is relevant only as a geometric figure useful for numerological or elemental symbolism, not for any association with heavenly bodies. The pentagram is far older than the Islamic moon and star, dating as far back as the time of Solomon at the very least.

I agree with Jamie, but also it is a symbol for protection as well.
The star in the center are the elements the ring aroungd it the spirit, and the crescent moon is the godess, Selene, Dianna, ect.
It is a beautiful symbol that is often associated with paganism, wicca, ect. The symbol though can also evoke hatred through many people because they think its evil, (which is wrong) with already preconceived notions by the church and their desperate goal to obtain followers at any cost.

Not to disagree with the other two, but as someone who was a practicing Druid before branching out to all spiritualisms, the sickle is a symbol of harvest and of Fire, if you are to go by the ideas presented by the Golden Dawn according to Regardie. My question is what is the sickles color? If it is gold, then it is a good omen for the reaping of something life affirming. I will agree with the other two on the moon and star, however.

It is a pentegram, a symbol that my religion uses to represent the elements of nature. Earth, air, wind, fire and water.
