The food at those restaurants is actually made fresh. They dont have 3 double cheeseburgers just sitting there waiting to be put in a bag. They have to make them. The reason its called "fast food" is because they have tools that make the food cook faster. If you're just ordering a value meal or something, its usually ready within 3 minutes. However, if you're ordering a lot of stuff, it takes time to make it. And if they run out of, say, chicken, they have to wait until it comes out of the fryer before they can make your sandwich (which usually takes about 5 minutes depending on what kind of chicken it is). So instead of making everybody in line wait longer, they pull the car up and give the next car their coffee or whatever they ordered. If you just ordered a soda, would you like to wait 5 minutes for it so some guy could get his chicken at the window? There is a method to their madness.

Great question. Even when the drive-thru is the only thing open, (ie. sitting area closed for the night). I almost got arrested for trying this in Portland around 1am. Had a cab drop us off at the drive-thru, but were refused service. NO OTHER CARS IN SIGHT, so not a safety issue. I think it's probably so you can't easily jump in the window to rob them.

Because it is Drive Thru, not walk up! The dangers of cars which are supposed to be there, not pedestrians. Imagine how many accidents would occur?? People get run over just walking down the street.

I don't know the exact reason. More people than you might think actually walk up to the window and expect to be served. I worked in fast food for 6 years and that's one thing that surprised me.

Because if you're on foot, you have no reason to go to the drive thru, you can just go inside the building and eat.

If I remember correctly from my fast food years, it was because of safety and insurance purposes. 1) Safety for the customers. They could get hit by the next car. 2) Safety for the employees, who knows if the guy walking up could be a robber. If they walk up, they have better access to put a gun in your face.

Safety for the people inside the restaurant...harder for a person in a car to assult or rob the worker if they are in a car.
