I'm looking to move back to Chicago but can't spend a lot on rent so the Gold coast and Lincoln park are out of the question. It also has to be kind of safe any advice?

Edgewater. it's located around Bryn Mawr between Sheridan Rd. And Broadway. It's a very reasonably prices neighborhood; you can find a one bedroom for anywhere from $650 and up (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A2184&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=Studio&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=). It's an up-and-coming neighborhood; there are a LOT of new condos, either old buildings being converted or new ones being built, so it's best to jump on it while the rents are still low. There are a bunch of new restaurants and shops moving into the area: a branch of the upscale Mia Francesa restaurant, a new branch of "That Little Mexican Restaurant" based on the one in Evanston, a new pastry cafe, a book store, etc. It's relatively safe as far as big city neighborhoods. of course, it has crime, but it's a very diverse neighborhood (white, black, latino, Asian, Indian - both native and east - african, etc.) There is public transportation all over the neiborhood (the Bryn mawr el station is right there and you can take an express bus on Sheridan Rd. that will get you downtown in about 30 mins. during non-rush hours). There are big and small grocery stores nearby and it's not too far from Andersonville. And best of all the lakefront is only a few steps away. You can sit by the lake, ride or run on the path, walk down to the sand to play volleyball or walk into the water. Do a search on line and look for the Edgewater Community Council for more info.

The suburbs outside of the city are resonably priced, you can get a good size apartment for around 7-800 in Lagrange only a 15 minute metra ride. Also the south side of the city close to University of Chicago is a good area with cheaper houseing but is a highly populated student area and the prices are rising rather quickly. Grab an apartment quide from the local grocery store in chicago next time you are up or check out apartments.com but your best bet is to get the chicago tribune on a sunday and go through it.

I used to live in Chicago. My apartments were in: 1) Rogers Park; 2) Lakeview; Wicker Park. Those neighborhoods all worked out fine for me. Lakeview was especially nice and safe; Wicker Park was second safest and in Rogers Park, my block was quite nice although some other blocks nearby weren't as nice. I also had a friend who lived in Andersonville, and some friends who lived in other neighborhoods that I can't recall the names of right now.

Roscoe Village (Roscoe and Damen) and Edgewater / Andersonville (around Foster and Clark and areas south, west, and east) are fun, interesting neighborhoods that are cheaper, yet still have good public transportation and aren't far from the Loop. You might try there.

Assuming you have your web id, you can access the UIC off campus listings. You can find a lot of decent apartments off of that. I'm assuming you are going to the east campus, and so, you would want to stay near the Blue Line. You can contact Galucci Reality or Near West Reality. The west campus is near the Pink Line.

i'm in dupage co. about 25 miles west of the city. it's nice here but the taxes are going up. not nearly as bad as cook co. though. it's about a 45 min. commute to downtown or you can take the train.welcome home.
