Well, there are a number of things that Malcolm X is known for, including being a famous Muslim minister and spokesperson for the Nation of Islam. Along with MLK, X is seen as one of the reformers that helped advance the cause of black and African-American equity in the US.
His effect in history is still the subject of much controversy. You have to remember, a lot of people didn't agree with X's ideas about equity and equality and thus would rather he never spoke. His rhetoric was sometimes bombastic, encouraging people to respond with violence to the violence perpetrated upon them. It was this advocacy of violence, in certain situations, and his admonition that he was a communist, that led to his survelience by the FBI.
His legacy is really a mixed bag. Sometimes he is seen as a reformer, someone on the vanguard of the new era, sometimes a villian. It is his advocacy of violence (at times) that makes people unsure as to what his legacy ought to be. You would have to read a little more on it, but his effect on history might be described as giving the movement a voice and a character that stood in oposition to MLK's. King was a pacifist, and advocated peaceful change; X was often thought of as violent and dangerous (though this is not very accurate).
For some, X's legacy damgaed the image of the movement--for others he was empowering.
Good luck!
