I would like to replant our Christmas tree on my fathers farm. It may not be possible because it obviously lacks roots but I would like to try.

If your Christmas tree doesn't have roots, it will die.

You can purchase Christmas trees with roots, and if you re-plant them, they will live.

You can play with this for fun. A long time ago Ranchers would cut small trees for fence posts. When planted in a wet area and with the Bark intact, some posts would actually sprout limbs. I not sure of their longevity. I guess there several ways to try this. Roots supply the water and nutrients. So, the less demand on the root system, the less roots needed. You could try removing about 1/2-3/4 of the limb length or make it like the fence post. Also, may use the bottom half as a fence post and in a wet area it may do something and then use the upper half and trim the limbs back to see what happen. You may try some rooting Hormone Powder, I would use a lot with this idea. Remember, it may need to be in a low wet area to work, IF, it work at all. It just an idea to play around with.
OK, the old schools here visiting have you another few ideas. Grafting. If, you had a tree of similar size or a little larger, cut to ground level and make a large hole in the stump/root area, then graft the tree into this. The other idea they telling me to try is cut about a foot off the top and graft this into a smaller stump. Use another Evergreen, like a Cedar or whatever available.
Ha! You got them all trying to figure you a way to save your tree. ;-)

It's dead. It will not grow new roots. Next year buy a live tree, with roots, and you can plant that.

You can replant a tree with no roots, but it's no longer referred to as replanting. We call it ''burying''.
