How do you "know" they are in the house? Grades are NOT good, sneaks around. Seen neighbors' kids sneak out and walking down streets, knocking down garbage cans down. Parents didn't believe it and said they stay inside! I see lots of younguns late at nite. What is there for these kids that late? My kids(grown now) went to bed at least an hour after I did AFTER finding out also that they were going out of house. Husband told me even he did when young and did drugs.

I think all kids need structure... Even on weekends they should have structure rather it be sports, going out as a family or out with friends. Kids shouldn't stay up all night, it is not healthy.
They should have a bedtime even on the weekends. That will help them not to become "night owls" wanting to stay up all night and get in a bad routine...

Sure I see no reason why they couldn't stay up after the parents go to bed. Teens have different sleep patterns and as long as they don't have school and all chores are done there's no harm in it. They can watch movies, surf the web, read books, write, paint, sing, dand, or tell stories, whatever they choose. They need their time without their parents too. As long as they're in the home or on the premises (adjacent structures or buildings on the property) I don't see a problem. We have teens (19 & 14) and for years they have gone into our shop where we have music equipement set up with thousands of karoake songs (we have a commercial buisness) and they have sung for hours with their friends and danced after we've gone to bed. I see no harm in it. It gives them a creative outlet, keeps them off of the streets, and gives them something to focus on and develope their talents rather than drugs or alcohol. It's also helped us fostor trust parent/child trust. My goodness you can't watch them every second of everyday. They need to be on their own sometime. Happy New Year.

what do you think they do when their parents are sleep? I mean because I use to stay up late when I was younger and all I did at night was watch t.v. or read books. I mean their in the house and so are their parents. I don't think there's much they could do with their parents home. I wouldn't let them stay up too late only because of school and things like that.

I have a 14 y/o daughter. She is tops in her class academically, has no problem getting up when called in the morning, is a voracious reader and has never given either me or my wife (her mother) any reason to mistrust her. Given all of the above, although it took a while for me to come to grips with, I don't have a problem allowing her the leeway to set some of her own schedule and accept the responsibility for doing so.

Are they in the house? What trouble could they get into in the house? You can't watch, literally, over their shoulder every minute. As long as you know they'e not going to leave, there shouldn't be a problem, chill out.

My son sometimes stays up late after I go to bed (he's 16), but not on school nights. No big deal.

That depends on what kind of kids you have. Don't think that ALL teenagers are up to no good when mom and dad go to bed.
