As a DH not only does his offense have to be better than everyone else in the entire American League. But his offense has to be a WHOLE LOT better than everyone in the American League. He is probably the best clutch hitter in baseball. If I had to chose one person with the game on the line to put at the plate, i would chose Big Papi in a heartbeat, unfortunatley baseball writers hate to give the award to a DH. Who knows though? The morons gave Ryan Howard the award just because he hit a gazillion homeruns more than everyone else. I'm a Cub fan who feels Albert Pujols got the raw end of the deal. His team made the playoffs, won the championship, and Howard gets the award when his team is barely over .500. Since the award is no longer given to the "Most Valuable Player" Ortiz is also at a disadvatage.

If he could play a position, and not be a DH, that would be a start. He should also pray that Manny Ramirez doesn't get traded. Because if Manny goes, Ortiz's productivity will go too. He only hits well behind Manny. You take Manny away, Ortiz will produce only slightly better numbers then when he was with the Twins. If Manny gets traded, Ortiz should try to follow him. That is what Ortiz has to do to win a MVP award.

Just think about Ozzie Smith and the answer will be clear. Defense is important, superior defense kills rallies, turn games around, wins games. Think about Jeter's play to home plate in the playoffs or Willie May's over the shoulder catch and throw to home plate or Pudge's laser throws to all bases... Ortiz doesn't do this. He's sitting out on too much of the action. He's a great, great hitter but someone else is doing the defensive work for him.

Staying healthy for the entire year wouldn't hurt. Thats the only reason he didn't win last year.
You guys are idiots, the DH is in the game so why cant he win the award. If he is clearly the best hitter in the league and he is most deserving, give it to him. He isnt cheating the system (like Bonds probably was during 5 of his MVP seasons)

I am a Red Sox fan and I do not believe that David Ortiz (or any DH for that matter) will win the MVP. He would have to have unbelievable stats and lead the league in almost every hitting category to have even a shot.

He has two things going against him to the sports writer; first - he doesn't play the field enough, second - he doesn't play for the Yankees (Evil Empire).
I believe that this is a crock; the MVP is the one player who was most irreplaceable on his team and the league. Not just the player with stats at bat and in the field. I would argue that they got it right, with Morneau this year, but that Papi is due an MVP for all he means to the Red Sox and the AL!

The reason why DH's are not considered is because.
1.They don't field a position.
2.They can't be judged defensively because of reason #1.
You just can't give a guy an award of this magnitude based off of just hitting.
The MVP award goes to the most complete player and hitting
( offense) and fielding ( defense ) is factored into that.

I agree with Smitty. There should be another award for DH's. The MVP is supposed to embody the best all around full time player in the league. Not a DH. Let him put his 1st baseman's glove on and get dirty and then we'll talk.

David Ortiz is an awesome player, but he is strictly an offensive player. I think that the MVP award should only be awarded to a player who not only dominates the plate, but plays a great defense.

He needs to be GREAT enough to play in the field.Pitchers only play every 5 days and that's why they don't get considered, either. You have to play the whole game, not just part-time to get the award. It's called Most Valuable PLAYER,not HITTER.I'm not a Yankee fan,but Jeter deseved to win.He led his team to the playoffs and without him, they wouldn't have been there.
