What type accomodation, flights from the UK and car hire should I use. I am vegetarian, so I usually go for self catering due to lack vegi options at resturants.

Southern CA.

In San Diego, you have the zoo, and Sea World. A little further north - closer to LA, you have Disney Land, and several other amusement parks. And there's always Hollywood.

San Diego.

Couple of hours from Disneyland and the Californmian Adventure and Universal Studios- easy day trips and you don't have to put up with LA which is not a good place for kids.

Locally there is Sea World, San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park (don't even start thinking of Longleat!)

And all around- Mexico for colour and difference, mountains, and Beaches, Beaches, Beaches.

With kids I would recommend gatting an efficiency- an apartment with kitchen. I use:

And it is right on the beach.

Disneyland would be a nice place to take the kids if you're visiting Southern Cali. The hotels nearby can be pretty expensive, but if you travel further south to Santa Ana, you can probably find a hotel with a good rate. The food inside the park can be rather pricy, but there are other options outside of the park. (If you're going to eat in the park, I recommend Hungry Bear Restaurant near Splash Mountain, or Buzz's place down in Tomorrow Land).

The restaurants outside the park are pretty good for vegies too. I would recommend Coco's or Tiffy's for food. They are two restaurants located really close to Disneyland. Both are kid-friendly and have good food. (I've never been to Tiffy's, but it's supposed to be a family restaurant). I HAVE been to Coco's, and they have a lot of vegetarian plates as well as a kid's menu, friendly attitude, and fast service. It is located on Katella, right near Disneyland. Search it out on Yahoo!Maps if you want more info.

Another option for food would be a fast food place like McDonald's. They have one pretty close to Disneyland with a playground and all sorts of stuff for the kids as well as a vegetarian menu. (And it's cheaper than Coco's~). Again, Map it if you want more info.

If you're traveling to Northern Cali, then I don't know much about the area... sorry. :(

check out the City Pass for Southern California - you can go to Disneyland/California Adventures for 3 days, Sea World, Universal studios, and the San Diego Zoo for a very reasonable price - plus you get a few added benefits like early admission and VIP line treatments and such. I used this for a vacation last August and it was amazing and also 2 years ago with my family. you can stay in Orange county or somewhere for part of your time and then in San Diego for some of the rest - on the days you aren't at a theme park you can explore historic points of interest, local shopping and restaurants and beaches - enjoy - plus southern California has great weather for most of the year.

If you have 2 weeks, my suggestion is to see the entire state. At least visit the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Try to get to San Diego if you can.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is relatively inexpensive and can be found at every major airport. You can fly into SFO or LAX (from the UK) and then you can use inexpensive domestic travel options like Southwest to fly from Northern California to Southern California and vice versa. You may find it even more fun driving through the state (i.e. take Route 1 and see the beautiful California coastline)

arrive in san francisco. spend three days in the bay area and see the wine country. then drive to big sur for two nights and check out the sights in this incredibly cool area. then drive to orange county and spend four nights visiting disneyland, santa monica beach, hollywood, paramount studios, etc. then drive to san diego for 3 nights and spend time at the great beaches and the bay. take a day to travel to tijuana in mexico so you can see the norteno way of life firsthand. then drive back to san francisco and back to the UK
