I have heard that most homes on Long Island burn oil for winter heat. I assume that they also have electric appliances and water heaters, etc, rather than natural gas. Anyone know? Thanks

I think the distribution for heating is about half gas and half oil. Some areas don't have piped gas service available so those homes have propane tanks delivered. Electric is super expensive here (17 cents per KW/hr) so nobody uses electric for heating.

There are a lot of electric hot water heaters, stoves and clothes dryers though. It really depends on what the house was built to use. If you have a fat electrical outlet in the kitchen and laundry room, then its electric. If there are gas connections, then its gas. Converting to one or the other involves getting a certified electrician or plumber.

One of the things people ask when looking at houses is what the utility bills have been over the past year or two.
