How can I set up a school savings scheme?

Many parents suffer from the pressures to use credit to buy. I would like to know of any schemes in the UK, perhaps run on credit union lines, that have been introduced to primary age children to encourage them to save their small change.

or open a bank account, and deposit "extra small change."
