Don't use too much cash. For the cash you need, I would recommend using the ATM machines once you get there and also charging everything you can to your credit card. That way you don't have to pay the exhorbitant exchange fees from the money changers. I would change a few bucks at the airport when you arrive - there are money changers at the major rail stations too.

I agree that you should use your credit/debit cards as much as possible -- exchange rates are ridiculous. You can also use your bank card at ATMs to get cash, that works too. BUT, a couple of things you should keep in mind first!

1. CHeck with your bank to make sure that your atm card will work in the United Kingdom. They don't always, so ask someone at your bank.

2. Get some British pounds BEFORE you go. Don't wait until you get there to change money over. Bank holidays there are different than in the US, and the airport is the last place you want to get money changed over. You can take care of that at your bank, too, so do that ahead of time!!

I lived in London for 4 months, and when I flew over the banks were all on holiday for 4 days. If I hadn't gotten any money ahead of time, I would have been stuck. You need the cash to tip as well as pay for cabs or the tube! Have fun -- London in March is great!

If you are talking about trying to get the best exchange rate over the next couple of months then I wouldnt really worry too much about it.

The pound is very strong right now and has been for some time hence the lousy exchange rate with the dollar. US fiscal policy isnt going to change any time soon and interest rates look to be capped currently so its unlikely that anything major is going to happen to move the exchange rate of the dollar higher.

As the other poster said, use your ATM or Debit card at bank machines to get the best current exchange rate and try to avoid the rates at the exchange desks as those wont be anywhere near as good.

Usually at 4:50pm on a Friday. That should really annoy the bank staff.

I always wait till I arrive and then I go to an ATM. Your bank will give you a better exchancge rate than most other places.

isn't it euros? and any time is fine, just go to an exchange place, banks and other similar institutions have to use the right conversions, others can round so you could loose a significant amount. watch the conversion rates and when they look best, then go for it. otherwise most credit and debit cards automatically convert prices for you! have fun!!!
