The smell is from the ammonia accumulated in the tank, and incidentally it's also the same chemical (ammonia) in most mammals pee. :)

You will have to cycle the tank as some recommended, but meanwhile you could go out to purchase some activated carbon from the fish shop and drop it into you tank or filter (check with the shop how to use it), there might be other product to reduce smell too, check with the guy in the shop. That might help some until your tank gets cycled. But do note this are short term fix, the best thing is to have the tank cycled and you should have no more ammonia problem.

That smell is ammonia. It will be there until your tank starts to cycle. Its amazing your fish are surviving this high ammonia. Read up on cycling a tank at http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84598

Once the tank starts cycling the smell will go away because you will have bacteria that eats ammonia.
