Why do some people talk only to make true friends ?

I have notice a lot of people who would talk to you only if you want to be true friends with them, otherwise they just avoid you. I mean, whats wrong with casual talk. Some people i have talked to feel that if i don't truly help them, its no use making conversation. What makes a true friend and in this age should we really care ?

For me, all the time I spend online, I want to make it count. Nothing wrong with casual talk but I prefer talk that means something and is not just a waste of time, because of the person seeking just to pass time.
