once written to, you cannot rewrite on cd-r disk, if you wish to use the same disk again, buy a cd-rw disk, which is a rewritable disk, you can format the cd-rw disk using the burning software like Nero.

by default, CDs do not require formatting before being burned. Windows XP allows writing to CDRs directly again without formatting first. There was an old fashioned way of writing CDs called packet writing. This depended on having the packet writing software installed in your PC thus producing a rather non-standard disk only really readable by a machine which also had the packet writing software installed. Far better to burn the disk properly with the burning software that you have supplied with it. Or if you really want to drag and drop in windows, (accepting that it will be non-standard), then upgrade to XP which has that facility built in.

You can only format CD-RW's, CD-rs come pre formatted because they are only written to once and thats it. You format a CDRW with your burning software. You are probably not seeing an option to do that because you are using the wrong type of media..

I am not entirely sure, but I think when you insert the CD into the drive, go to My Computer and Right-Click it and select format. Again, as I said, I'm not sure.

Good luck!
