Yes. By law, they receive a pension equal to what a sitting Cabinet member (like the Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, Attorney General, etc) makes.
President Ford also got a pension for his time as Vice President and as a Congressman.
President Carter gets a pension for being a former governor of Georgia.
President Bush's dad gets a pension for his time as Vice President, Congressman, U.N. ambassador, ambassador to China, CIA director...and I may be leaving one out.
I think President Clinton gets one for his time as Arkansas governor.
Of course, these sums are all peanuts to ex-presidents.. A former president can get six figures for one speech.

In addition to the answers others have given they also often make money with other projects. Clinton wrote a book, and many presidents go on the lecture circuit which menas they get paid to give talks at Universities and what not. They make a lot more money for thier apperances and and lectures than anything else i think.

The retirement benefits received by former Presidents include a pension, Secret Service protection, and reimbursements for staff, travel, mail, and office expenses. The Presidential pension is not a fixed amount, rather it matches the current salary of Cabinet members - $166,700/year as of January, 2002

Actually, they get a pension for government service PLUS if they were in the military, they get a pension check from that too according to what their rank was when they left the service.
They also can charge a fee for speaking engagements or to endorse products or services according to their preferences.
Uncle Sam picks up the tab for Secret Service though.

yes they do plus they get many other benefits including secret service guards. ford was appointed president from speaker of house and innocently joked about how the brief bump up would have a huge effect on his retirement. i wonder about the super-rich retired presidents like the present one. he doesn't need it but will he accept it? i wonder if all former presidents have accepted it? a few really needed it like u.s. grant when he finished his second term. he had endless financial problems.

I heard that an ex-President will earn more money and have a more comfortable lifestyle after he's left the White House. I guess that has to do with all the security still placed on him...

Yes they do.
They have many privileges and full benefits (including stipends for creating and opening their own libraries) that last for the remainder of their lives.
Included in that is secret service protection.
It makes perfect sense to provide all these benefits to the men who have served and led our country.
