We've never invented anything that had the remotest possibility of destroying the universe.
Causing some local damage to our planet -- yes. But we couldn't have caused any damage even to our local region of the solar system.
Black holes exist in the billions in space -- there's a supermassive one at the center of our own galaxy (and at the center of most galaxies). A little teeny one created on earth wouldn't destroy the universe.
Instead of complaining about things the average person can't understand, it would be a better idea to improve our education system so the average person *did* understand what science was doing and why these things are important. Better to raise the average than dip to the lowest common denominator...:)

"And what is your alternative? Show me a culture devoid of religious belief that has ever amounted to anything. Just how many time have YOU stood on a street corner ringing a bell so that a charitable organization can do good? I have never seen a atheistic organization doing charity work. Can you name one?" wow... There are atheist charities (i just googled it too), and it's retarded to assume everybody doing something good is religious, as if all atheists care only for themselves and are incapable of doing good. If you look at all the hate and intolerance that religion spawns (like the westboro baptist church, man they are mad at everything, it's scary...) But i think humans will always find stupid **** to fight over (like that episode of south park where Cartman goes to the future and the atheists are fighting a war over what they should be called, i love that episode). although i am not religious, i think it would be stupid to try to stop people from having faith. instead of not teaching kids about god, it would be great if people stopped teaching their children that evolution is a lie and that gay people are evil. that would be a good start also, i wonder if intolerance of intolerance is hypocritical... or just paradoxical =D

If you 'don't understand' how can you suggest 'things (haarp, CERN, Nanotech..) that could possibly destroy the universe ?
Before claiming to know what is going to 'destroy the universe' you could at least do a bit of research.
Also, I suggest you take a Politics and Economics course.
When you understand politics & economics you will stop asking questions like this.
To give you a clue - I believe that, to prevent the progress of science, means imposing your views ('take a break') BY FORCE on the WHOLE WORLD.
You (and people like you) may stop the USA = already it seems likely that in 10 years we will be buying our genetically engineered bird flu vaccine from China.

Many years ago, we had enough nuclear weapons in the world/earth to destroy it if they were all set off at once. Man was so horrified by the Hydrogen bomb and the Neutron bomb that it was put away and never played with again. Personally, I think the big concern should be world population, that is just as dangerous as all these horrific weapons. Many many of our present environmental problems link to overpopulation, think about it. We are actually destroying our oceans and the life in them. The biggest bombs are being dropped in the worlds bedrooms, if you get my drift!

Wow. your question has actually saved the universe.
Thankyou.
HEY, WAKEUP.
Inventing THE WHEEL
didn't threaten THE UNIVERSE.
CERN projects smash stuff smaller than an atom.
Its like the PRINCESS and the PEA with you.
Nobody felt the collision, OK?

Well i see what you are trying to say but in hospitals, the NHS build new technology to save lives. So technology is not all bad.
Is it?
But i agree that some things ruin the enviroment.

They will never invent something that will destroy the universe they may come up with something that will accelerate their own demise!

never it is our way off this planet. we need to figure this stuff out for reasons of space travel . one day our planet will be uninhabitable and we need to go somewhere else. this is not a question of will but more when. so as we invent these things we are progressively finding the answers we need to understand the universe so we can then span it.

Our best efforts to destroy the universe, are too feeble, the rest of what you were told is science fiction.

We aren't going to destroy yhe universe or even the earth but we might manage to kill ourselves off. I doubt that we could even manage that.
