here we go I am in pre algebra and I am trying to finish some homework and cannot figure it out...
The problems are
5(b - 3) = 7b - 14

In that equation I need to solve for b

The second one

9s +7 = 4s - 8

first, carry out the multiplication, if any, then get the variable (letter) on one side,,,, you do this by adding/subtracting,, the opposite of what you wish to move, to both sides,,,, then finally divide both sides by the number in front of the variable
5(b-3)=7b-14
5b -15=7b-14
5b -5b -15 =7b -5b -14
-15 = 2b -14
-15 + 14 =2b -14 +14
-1 =2b
-1/2 = 2b/2
-1/2 = b

1. use distributive property with the 5(b-3) so you do 5*b=5b and 5*3=15 so that would be 5b-15. then you would change all subtraction to adding the opposite. so 5b-15 would be 5b+-15. and 7b-14 would be 7b+-14. then you would add 15 to both sides. that would end up as 5b=7b+1. then you would multiply the whole thing by 5. use the distrubutive property again, 5*1=5, 5*7b=35b, 5*5b=b your answer would be b=35b+5

2.again, add all subtracting to adding the opposite. then add -7 ti both sides. then you will get 9s=4s+-15. then multiply the whole thing by 9. use the distributive property, 9*15=135, 9*4s=36s, 9*9s=s. your answer would be s=36s+135.

FIRST ONE
1. Open brackets.
5b - 15 = 7b - 14

2. Collect like terms on either side of the = sign.
5b - 7b = -14 + 15

3. Reduce by evaluating the expressions on both sides.
-2b = 1

4. Divide both sides by -2
b = -1/2 OR b = -0.5

SECOND ONE
Similar to the previous one...

9s - 4s = -8 - 7

5s = -15

s = -15/5

s=-3

Factor your B in the first problem. And then get your Bs on one side of the equal sign and you'll be good to go

5(b-3)=7b-14
Factor: 5b-15=7b-14

With the second one, just get your S's on one side:
9s+7=4s+8
5s+7=8
5s=1

You multiply 5 by what's in the parenthesis so you have
5b-15= 7b-14. Then get b on a side by itself by subtracting the lowest b value from the other b value. So you get 5b to cancel out on the left side of equal sign. You now have -15=2b-14. Still trying to get b by itself, get the -14 to cancel out by adding 14 to both sides. Now you have 2b=1. Now to get b by itself, get the 2 to cancel out by dividing both sides by two (remember you have to do the opposite operation to get it to cancel), so now you have a -1/2=b. Hope that helped!

9s+7=4s-8
5s= -15
s= -3

#solution first 5(b-3)=7b-14
5b-15=7b-14
5b-7b=-14+15
-2b=1
b=-1/2
b=-0.5
#solution second 9s+7=4s-8
9s-4s=-8-7
5s=-15
s=-15/5
s=-3

5(b - 3) = 7b - 14
5b - 15 = 7b - 14
5b - 7b = -14 + 15
-2b = 1
b = -1/2

9s + 7 = 4s - 8
9s - 4s = -8 -7
5s = -15
s = -3

for the 1st one
distribute the 5 into the (), then combine like terms
b= -0.5

same for 2nd, combine like terms
s=-3

how come you have homework now? didn't you just go on break?
