Why not? If they had a good relationship and still remain friends, it shouldn't matter that she is his ex mother-in law.
However if you think their friendship is adversely affecting your marriage you should talk to your husband about how you feel.
Ask yourself, is this a real problem or am I just suffering from a little jealousy?

After 27yrs, he's more of a son to her than an in-law....he's established a relationship with his ex mother-in-law that goes beyond the relationship he had with her daughter....my Dad is still a part of my Mom's family and is invited to all the family weddings/gatherings after not being with my Mom for 25yrs. My step Mom goes to all the gatherings with him too....Be big about it, let go of your jealously and you may find yourself a few new acquaintances that turn out to be good friends as well....

because she had a relationship with him before the divorce, maybe she didn't want the divorce in the first place, and remains loyal to the ex son in law, hoping one day that there will be a reconciliation between them.

It is hard to let go of people that are as much a part of a family as blood. Twenty-seven years is a long history with another person and sometimes they can't let go. Nothing wrong with that, and don't take it personally.

If they had a good relationship why not? But maybe they still want them to be together and that's the issue. If that's the case than that's just trouble waiting to happen.

Are there mutual grand-children? That would be a good reason too. If not, it could be because she genuinely likes him or he meets some need within her.
