Usually gradients, they can be just about anything that is printable in an equal amount. The finest ruler I have ever used is in hundredths of an inch, hardly usable to most of us without a microscope. The smallest unit of measurement I have used is an Angstrom, look it up if you have time, pretty mindblowingly small. After looking that up look up ALD or Atomic Layer Deposition, which I worked with a little, it is building a layer of material in thickness of atoms, a bit too small for a ruler!
