I don't mean the random people you chat with once in a while... the folks you've been talking to for over 1 or 2 years, but have never really met. You might have spoken to them on the phone or sent stuff through the mail- so you know they're who they say they are. Do you consider them actual "friends" or just 'online friends"?

Good question -- I have a lot of ambivalence about it. There is one person I have been in e-contact with for about 5 years. We read each other's online journals and comment on them, and I find that I do care about what happens to her; when she's hurting, it makes me feel sad, etc. A few times, I have wished there was something more tangible I could do for her than write words to her, but I never have. So, emotionally, I suppose I am her friend, but because I can't have any real impact on her life, another part of me says that no, I cannot call her a friend in the truest sense of the word.

What about you? I hope you'll do an "Add Details" on this question.

They're still people, so I'd say they're real friends. The people you talk to online can fill the same need for friendship and support that the people you see in person do. In fact, sometimes it's better, because there's that degree of anonymity and they don't know all your other friends, so you can talk to them about things you don't feel comfortable saying to others. I value all my friends and acquaintences, be they online or right in front of me.

I asked a similar question a few days ago, and what I pieced together was that they're as real as your flesh and blood friends, some more so because since you don't really have to see them (and you control if you talk to them again) you end up opening up to them more.

I've met a few and stay in touch via email, and I consider them my friends.

I've several good friends who are online friends only -- one a girl in Canada whom I've never met, yet we write every single day -- and what I'd do without these friends is beyond comprehension. They are there during the good and the bad, just like my non-online friends. People are people, whether they're touchable or not, and I love 'em!
