Speaking as a native american, I'd say he was probably the most mixed-blessing our people ever received. On the one hand, he opened up an exchange of technology and culture between us and the anglos that we have both benefitted from but on the other hand, well, it goes without saying that he was the catalyst that allowed some people to do some terrible, unspeakable things.

As for his contributions, the most notable one would be:
He miscalculated the distance between Europe and the Indes (via the Atlantic ocean) and believed it was only 2,300 miles. With this information, he set out to find a route between Europe and the Indes, not knowing that the actual distance between the two places was actually 12,200 miles (far longer than any ship at that time could sail). Lucky for him, during his voyage he bumped into the Americas, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Christopher Columbus was a murderous basta**, I don't care to even remember one but unfortunately it is too hard not to notice he was the catalyst to the Native American's heartache.
