Try a spray bottle. That usually works nicely to deter cats from things you don't want them in. It may take a few days for him to associate the two but give it a try.

You can find a pull-down screen you can hang over the entrance to the baby room, I think it works better than canopes. It will prevent the cat from entering the room, but it is better when the baby is asleep, isn't it?
I wouldn't use cages. Just give the cat a lot of time to get adjusted. And when the baby is asleep, pay a lot of attention to the cat!
My dog was not comfortable with our newborn until the baby was mobile and could pet the dog without hurting him (meaning, for months). Be patient - that's the key! Both the baby and the cat will eventually be fine as long as you exercise caution and set limits from the beginning.

Crib tents are a great idea, or go ahead and keep the door shut and let him meow - he might meow in a cage anyway! Don't worry, he won't think you don't like him. As long as you keep feeding him and scratching his ears he won't doubt your love for him, even if he doesn't get his way.

When the baby comes it is very important the kitty stays out of the crib. (Duh, you know that right?) Anyway, my boys are very spoiled as well. They scratch at the door if I keep it closed, but they eventually give up and go away. I would start kicking him out of the bedroom now. Get him used to the door being closed and him being outside the bedroom now. The first couple of nights will be rough, but he'll get over it.
Congrats on the baby!

you will have to close the door and let him deal with it...
I assume the crib is in your room for now...
I am really really glad you are not going to get rid of your cat.. I adopted 2 cats who were brought to the shelter becuase their owners were pregnant.. one cat was for sure going to be euthanized (she was going nuts at the shelter where I worked) a 3yr old male wouldnt have a hope.....
in time he will stop meowing - dont give in...
cats dont smother babies - thats a myth...

your kitty will be fine. he might be alittle put out when baby comes due to lack of attention, but hell understand more than you think. one of my cats-stinky is her name- is very small ( fully grown she will only be about 3 lbs) has "claimed" my 6 month old. she sneaks into the crib and sleeps curled up next to her. my other cats, the largest being a male about 18 lbs donteven get into the crib with her. so, dont worry and love BOTH of your babies

They sell mesh covers that go over the crib kind of like a tent to keep pets out of them I don't know what they are called but I saw them at Babies 'R' Us.

something that is an absolute god send is a crib net/tent. i am a nanny and the mom has one her son's crib to keep her cats out. it is a wonderful thing. it not only keeps the cats out but keeps the boy from climbing out of the crib. you can find them at target or online at one step ahead, i think.

Try a crib tent:
http://www.securebaby.com/crib_tents_all.html
the cat won't be able to jump on the baby when he's in there. Our cats were spoiled too- same thing- they'd cry at the door all night, we started putting them in the basement when we went to bed, you can also try a scat mat:

Every time he gets in there take him out, spray him with a squirt bottle. After so many times he will realize he's not allowed in there. But warning...he will be curious whats in there when the baby comes home! Just be careful not to let him sleep with the baby.
