By using spin. Topspin, and the ball will come down quicker, allowing you to hit harder. Underspin, and the ball will stop where it landed, so you could really hit it as hard as you want.

It would be difficult to break down the technical aspects of this question without being with you, or at least having some good pictures. That said, the basics are this:
Plant on your back foot. Transfer your weight forward to your front foot as you swing. FOLLOW THROUGH. When the ball gets to you, pretend that it is inside a long loaf of french bread and make sure you swing through the entire loaf of bread when you hit the ball. That will generate more power than if you abbreviate your swing.
Upper body exercise helps with this, too! One of my best friends has really cruddy form, and he hits much harder than I do, simple because his arms are bigger than my entire body (slight exaggeration, of course). :-P

by using topspin. Swing the raquet upwards to make the ball spin towards your opponent. this will make the ball go twice as fast after it bounces than when it is in the air. And you can swing upwards as fast as you want. keep the raquet mostly flat towards the net, with the appropriate tilt if the ball is above the net, tilt it a little forward and roll it over, or if it below it pretty flat, maybe tilted back a little.

This is a really bad thing to focus on. A player who hits with very good depth may make impossible for you to hit with lots of pace.
Your focus should be on bending your knees "loading" before each shot (when possible), metting the ball out in front of your body and keeping the deep in the "red" zone of your opponents court!
Oh and hire a good teaching pro....this is hands on work!

power in tennis is generated by timing...long back swing with faster acceleration through the ball and follow through.
