You will get a lot of different answers here to that question. I noted that one person already mentioned that hackers and virus targeter's will most likely hack the bigger names in the Anti-virus industry and this is 100% correct. I used Norton Internet security for 2 years and I got more virus's than you could imagine. In fact with Norton was the only time I ever got virus's.
I have found personally that the free versions out there DO work very very well. AVG 7.5 is excellent and if you google ANTIVAR that is another really good one.
Think of your Anti-virus software in this respect. What will hackers be targeting? Anti-virus software that they know people will be using or will they be looking for offbrands that not many people have heard of or know about?
AVG is becoming very popular. ANTIVAR is hardly even heard of and it has kept many people's computers virus free for many years. I have installed this on a lot of computers over the years and not one complaint. SO are free anti-virus products good? My answer is yes they are just as good and sometimes better than the top paid versions.
Good luck with what ever you choose to use ;)

Some do, some don't. Honestly. I recently looked in Consumer Reports and saw that some free AV programs beat out the paid ones. AVG is a good one for Antivirus and Spybot S&D and AdAware are good for spyware removal. Money doesn't always mean it's good.
Another thing about paid programs is that many people know about them, and so whenever people write viruses, they will target the big name ones, like Norton for example. I don't use Norton anymore because almost every virus out there knows how to bypass it now.

You paid for windows, they should and I think they do offer Spyware VIrus junk. What gets me is why does the Biggest Software company in the world does not offer or cannot make an Anti Virus program.
Your best defense even with a AV program is incremental backups. Every server IT worth a nikel does it, and every CIO does it. Computers will crash, Backups will replace the what you thought was lost.

TO put it simply no. There are reasons why you pay money. Now some free programs work just fine, but there are other ones that when you download them they put spyware on your computer and then you have to buy their program to take it off. Go to like Pcworld.com and check out what they have there as far as free stuff. Virus scanners though, the only way to go is Norton AntiVirus 07 or the whole internet security package.

only own opinion for sure. i take advantage of Avast , I surely have even have been given superantispyware and Malwarebytes. i presently replaced to Comodo firewall which looks nice and that i seem as nicely up swifter. they are all loose for inner maximum use and that i've got had no difficulty with Viruses Trojans Hackers and so on. I additionally use domicile windows Defender from the Microsoft web site. it somewhat is secure to apply 2 anti-undercover agent products yet in no way use better than one A/V because it may reason conflicts. you should run A/V and anti undercover agent weekly.

If so why two versions ? They always provide a comparision table what you would get with paid and what you get with free ! online scanning is better than free antivirus, AVG is one of the good free software.
