To be blunt, Agnew was corrupt, taking bribes in connection with his service as Governor or Maryland:

He pleaded "no contest" to related tax evasion charges (yes, even illegal bribes are income!) and resigned. He wasn't part of Watergate, but this separate scandal certainly added to the stench of malfeasance and dishonesty in the Nixon White House.
Ford was appointed Vice President (approved by Congress) in accordance with the 25th Amendment, and then took over as president when Nixon resigned. Ford then chose Nelson Rockefeller as his vice-president.
It was the only time in our history (so far) that a president and vice persident did not stand for a national election before serving, and the only time (so far) when both the president and vice president serving at the end of four years were not the same men who were sworn in at the beginning. Before this, if the president died and the vice president took over, the vice presidency was just left vacant until the next election. (The 25th Amendment was adopted after Kennedy was assassinated.)

Spiro Agnew, like Richard Nixon, was cheating on his taxes. He was Nixon's vice president. Gerald Ford was the next honest person in line for the presidential throne.

Agnew had to resign, Ford took his place and helped a nation that desperately needed it at the time.
hazeltine, time to go do research. Nixon and Ford were not close friends, no matter what the voices inside your tin-hat tell you.

I don't know details, but I know Agnew had been the governor of Maryland and there was some scandal attached to him from that which was a factor in his resignation from Vice Pres.

Agnew resigned, and Ford was a very close friend of Nixons. and Nixon knew he could convince Ford to pardon him so he would never go to jail for his crimes.
I'm guessing Bush will do the same thing soon...
