Grits is a southern food made from corn (had some for breakfast this morning). It's the same thing as polenta, but grits is (are?) white, while polenta is yellow. Other than the color, they're the same. We southerners get a chuckle out of Yankees' confusion about the things.

Grits has the same consistency as, and a taste very similar to, farina, which is often known as Cream of Wheat here. It can be served plain, with butter or grated cheese, with crumbled bacon, or with brown sugar and cream. Serving it sweetened is often considered to be appropriate only for children, although as an adult from a north-south state, I prefer mine that way.

Grits is a type of maize porridge and a food common in the Southern United States and southern Manchuria (where it is called gezi in Mandarin) consisting of coarsely ground corn, traditionally by a stone mill. The results are passed through screens, with the finer part being corn meal, and the coarser being grits. Many communities in the Southern U.S. had a gristmill until the mid-20th century, with families bringing their own corn to be ground, and the miller retaining a portion of the corn for his fee. Grits aficionados still prefer stone ground grits, although modern commercial milling companies prefer other methods. In South Carolina, state law requires grits and corn meal to be enriched, similar to the requirements for flour, unless the grits are ground from corn where the miller keeps part of the product for his fee.

Hominy or corn grits, kind of like cream of wheat or oatmeal, but corn based. If prepared properly, they can be OK. My mom used to eat grits with a little butter, If you mix them with cheese they can actually be quite a nice side dish with fried foods.

----
Grits are small broken grains of corn. They were first produced by Native Americans centuries ago. They made both "corn" grits and "hominy" grits. Falls Mill produces "corn" grits.

Grits are really awful. However, for some reason, they are popular in the South. It's coarsely ground corn with a lot of salt. It's white and lumpy and vile tasting.
