It's caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere, pretty high up (like 5-6 miles). It can happen during the day, in which case you see a ring around the sun, or at night, when you see the ring around the moon. It's just a reflection of the sun/moon off of the ice crystals.

No, more seriously, it was probably just an effect of the atmosphere and your eyes causing a light halo. There isn't actually a ring around the Moon.

Nope... there wasn't sufficient humidity at extreme altitude final night right here to variety a Corona. The ARE cool while they do variety however... distinctly with a huge complete moon like final night !!
