I have to admit that when I saw this question in the list, I thought polygamy ruled at the White House!

First Wives
______________________________

John Adams --- He died on 7/4/1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, at the age of 93. His wife Abigail Adams died on 10/28/1818 of typhoid fever.

Thomas Jefferson --- He died on 7/4/1826, the same day as John Adams to boot. His wife Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson died on 9/6/1782. She'd suffered from diabetes and possibly other illnesses throughout her life, so this is perhaps sadly not too surprising.

James Monroe --- He died on 7/4/1831 from heart failure & TB. Yet another Independence Day death! His wife Elizabeth Kortright Monroe died on 9/23/1830. She was another of the "sickly" First Ladies.

Andrew Jackson --- He died on 6/8/1845 of a number of factors including TB, dropsy & heart failure. His wife Rachel Donelson Robarbs Jackson died of a heart attack on 12/22/1828, perhaps contributed to by the election's stress and attacks on the Jacksons during the election due to the illigitamcy/adultry scandels of the day. Still a very controversal point in presidential election history.

Martin Van Buren --- He died on 7/24/1862 due to asthma & heart failure after a bad case of pneumonia. His wife Hannah Hoes Van Buren died on 2/5/1819 from TB related causes.

Franklin Pierce --- He died on 10/8/1869 from cirrhosis of the liver. His wife Jane Appleton Pierce died on 12/2/1863.

Rutherford B Hayes --- He died on 1/17/1893 of a heart attack. His wife Lucy Ware Webb Hayes died on 6/25/1889.

Chester A Arthur --- He died on 11/18/1886. His wife Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur died on 1/12/1880.

Herbert Hoover --- He died on 10/20/1964. His wife Lou Henry Hoover died on 1/7/1944 from a heart attack.

Richard Nixon --- He died on 4/22/1994 from stroke related causes. His wife Thelma "Pat" Catherine Ryan Nixon died on 6/22/1993 from lung cancer, though she had a number of other previous health problems including two strokes.

First Wives of Remarried Presidents
______________________________

John Tyler --- He died on 1/18/1862 of bronchitis & bilious fever. He technically outlived his first wife Letitia Christian Tyler, who died on 9/10/1842. She was the first president's wife to die in the White House.

Millard Fillmore --- He died on 3/8/1874 due to stroke related effects. His first wife Abigail Fillmore died on 3/30/1853 from pneumonia, probably complicated by previous illnesses.

Benjamin Harrison --- He died on 3/13/1901 from influenza & pneumonia. His first wife Caroline Lavinia Scott Harrison died on 10/25/1892 from TB.

Theodore Roosevelt --- He died on 1/6/1919 of a coronary embolism. His first wife Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt died on 2/14/1884 from Bright's disease.

Woodrow Wilson --- He died on 2/3/1924. His first wife Ellen Louise Axson Wilson died on 8/6/1914 from Bright's disease.
