I just inherited a a 2 yr old desktop replacement Toshiba laptop in great condition. It's 512 RAM, P4, Win XP, Wiresless card. I plugged it into my cable internet connection directly but it still does not connect to the net. The connections icon shows the presence of network signal but when I try to "repair" the connection it gives me a message- "TCP/IP not enabled- cannot proceed". Any suggestions?

Did you try running the Internet connection wizard? I think that will do it. Go to Start > Connect to >

Otherwise, go into Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connections > Local Area Connection Status > Properties and install tcp/ip

In the connections window does it show the connection as being enabled? If it is disabled right click and enable it.

Do you have cable internet? Some ISP's use the mac address of a computer to authenticate the customer's service. If you were using a previous computer the same way and this one doesn't work I would call them up and let them know you have a new one.

What I would recommend is if you are connecting the pc direct to the modem would be to get a router to help protect yourself being open to the internet and register its mac address with your ISP and then whenever you add or replace a computer in your house you won't have to keep registering these mac addresses with your ISP. Good Luck.

Sounds like TCP/IP protocol is not installed? Was this PC networked ever or just used for dial-up? Or maybe it was used for wifi networking only and the previous owner took out other protocols for security reasons.

Go into control panel and find networks & dialup icon, open it and find the network device you are using for cable.

Right click it and choose properties.

On the 'general' tab see if you can see 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' on the list of protocols... if it's there unticked then tick it. Then try again.

If it's not there use 'Install' -> 'Protocol' to add TCP/IP. If you get to this point you *may* need your XP install disk - it depends how your PC was built. once it's installed, try your connection again.

A couple of solutions to that problem. You can get a wireless router and the computer will connect with that with no problem at all. Check to see if your internet company charges you for multible computers. If not get them to repair the conection while your online. But foremost check your device manager to see if the correct driver is installed to begin with.
