Small events like the flutter of a butterfly's wing can cause a swirl of air that grows into a hurricaine is the buttlerfly effect. The problem with the concept is that it disregards the effects of everything else. The hurricaine is the result of millions of other events, heating of the sea, cooling currents of the air and other butterfly's flapping in unison or in opposition if you will and not just the result of one flap of a butterfly's wing.
The premise of the movie is neat to consider but it is flawed in that it negates the effects of the choices others make in the course of their own destiny. That is, one girls fate is not dependant on a choice some boy makes.
Another movie to consider is Terminator. "There is no fate but what we make."
My stepfather died when I was eight. Had he lived, I might have grown up in another state and married a different woman. My life would have been very different from what it is today. At the same time, my life is a result of the sum-total of all decisions I have made in my life.

It's called the Butterfly Effect, because a Chinese Chaos Theory, known as the Butterfly effect, states that "the power of a butterflies wings can be felt on the other side of the world." Meaning that something really minor like a butterfly flapping its wings, could result in like a tsunami far away, and that everything is related. This is pretty much what the movie is about. The slightest change ends up changing everything.

The term butterfly effect comes from chaos theory. Basicaly the theory states that any action you take now has an effect that grows as time goes on to effect the future vastly. I personaly think this theory is some what bunk. I would more likely view it as grand unified chaos theory where everything you do effects everything else but everything else has the same effect on you so it all balances out untill you run into anomolys or something that makes free will possible. Think of it this way you can either believe that a butterfly flaping its wing makes a hurrican a year later or you can view it as a butterfly flaping its wings along with every other event in the universe leads to a hurricane as long as no anomolys or free will exists... I personaly believe free will exists so its impossible to predict any event in the universe perfectly.

Well the saying goes a butterfly flaps its wings in one part of the world it causes a hurricane in another.
It is saying that any incident no matter how small can cause something bigger to happen.
For example, say you are driving to your friend's house and you decide to take a different way there. You get into a car accident. You sit there thinking if I only went the normal way.
Here is another example from my own life. When I was a freshman in college a guy I had a crush on invited me over to hang out. I was incredibly shy and couldn't work up the nerve to go over. There were times when I thought what would have happened if I did go over. My life would have taken a completely different direction. That is what they generally mean by the butterfly affect.

Someone said that a butterfly opening and closing it's wings on one side of the planet could potentially cause a hurricane on the other side of the planet.
The idea is this - everything is related to something else. Every action relates to something else.
For example say the bus was running a little fast along it 's route one morning. Someone's car broke down that morning so they are running to catch the bus. As they run they are digging in their pocket for change. A quarter happens to fall out of their pocket. Later on a child sees that quarter, bends to pick it up, and is hit by a car. The parent decides that corner needs a stop light to prevent that ever happening again so they get up petitions, speak and cause a vote to be taken to get the street light installed. Someone with money decides they like the parents style and ask them to run for public office which they accept. They do so well at it at the city level that they run for senator and win. Eventually the run for the presidency of the US and win.
The whole chain of events would not have taken place if the bus driver hadn't been running ahead of schedule.
That's the butterfly effect.

call it a coincidence or not, but today i just watched The Butterfly Effect 1
The Butterfly Effect is simply a term used for explaining the results of CHAOS theory..
now not to get into details, put simply it means that a very small change in the environment around you can result in the changing of the entire system.
something as small as a butterfly flying across flapping its wings can cause small shifts in the atmosphere and bring a tornado half way across the world.
for example, if you decide to do something differentely from what it actually is supposed to be, you are changing your future from what it is supposed to be.
even a very small action has vaast effects
this is not the actual scientifical explanation, for that please check out wikipedia, a really nice src
the concept of alternate realities really makes it interesting.

The butterfly effect basically says that small events can lead to big ones. A typical example is that an event as small as a butterfly fluttering its wings can cause atmospheric changes that may result in a hurricane or tornado.
