This isn't communist China. Employers can't fire you for looking for other jobs. Yes, there are interoffice politics and they can make up other reasons for firing you(if they expect you are leaving) but only an evil employer would do that-an employer that I personally would not want to be working for.
Don't lie and call in sick. They are keen to it and it will give them reason to speculate all sorts of other reasons.
Just take personal time. If asked what, state politely as possible that that is why it is deemed "personal".
Secondly, law does count. Dismissal due to perceived lack of loyalty is wrong and punishable under court of law. This is a free country-no one can condemn due to job searching and going on interviews.
When dealing with these things I always maintain an attorney on retainer-just in case I have to pull my ace out at the last second.
Check out: dol.gov for does and don'ts of employers and also nolo.com is a good source.
Don't ever take *hit from any company. If you do it will perpetuate itself endlessly.
Good Luck.

No you are not entitled to time off, why would your current employers give you time off to find a job with someone else? Think about it. The only way an employer is ok with that is if they are relocating and you aren't going with them, then they would understand and allow you to have time off, like one of my employers did. chances are you'll either need to schedule the interview after work or before work and tell your employer you have a doctors appointment. There are no rules on time off for interviews, bottom line is employer's don't like it.

If you can't get the time away from work, you really need to discuss this with the interviewing party. (I have been known to conduct interviews over the phone or off hours.)
If you've already taken more than one "sick day" getting through this process...you probably need to be careful. Getting fired for bad attendance is going to look bad to future employers, and there's no good way to spin "Well, I was calling in sick so I could go on job interviews". Your next employer is far more likely to respect that you're trying to do right by your current employer, than resent inconvenience of having to make special arrangements to work with you.

Schedule a teeth cleaning right after the interview and leave from work early to get to your job interview. Everyone gets off work for the Dentist. Schedule it late in the afternoon so you don't have to go back into work that day.
Make sure you don't leave your current job just to get another job that you might leave in 6 months again. Employers look at how many different jobs you have had in the past and they will judge you for your loyalty to your past employers.
This way your not lying, you don't have to play like you were sick the next day and you get your teeth cleaned ):

You surely cannot be fired just for going for an interview. If it is that important ,and you are qualified for the job, you should apply for holiday where the interview date falls at the end of your holiday period. Then if it is refused you could ask for your holiday to start later or be reduced but to still cover your interview date. Do not resort to fibbing as you could lose your job for that.

A friend of mine said that he had a doctors appointment and said he would only be off for a couple of hours.
He got the train to London,The lady that was interviewing him was 1/2 hour late then on the way back the underground train he was on broke down.
He got back to work in the afternoon and told them the biggest pack of lie's ever saying he was referred to a physio and made up a phantom shoulder injury. He even made up the name of his doctor and said that they could call him if they wanted.

Try to arrange for an interview after your working hours or during your lunch hours. For lunch hours, check with your boss if it is alright to stretch your lunch hours as you have an "important" errand to run.
Since you hated your job, does it matters if they are suspicious? They should probably be the ones worried about get a replacement. Check you employment contract if they need to compensate you if they terminate your service before you resign.

Schedule it for your day off during the week. Don't risk losing your job by lying and saying your family member is ill and then going to a job fair, only to bump into your boss at the job fair.

Either the day before, start complaining about being nauseated, or if it is an after noon interview, complain all morning, and finally go home sick.

Calling in sick is your best option, you don't want to lose your job before you get a new one. Just don't get caught in the lie.
