The cost of 10 oranges and 5 apples is 3.35. Twenty-four oranges and twelve apples cost 8.04. Find the cost of each orange and each apple.

I have to use the methods of comparison or elimination, or substitution.

Every time I try it is always gets cancelled out. These are the equations I get out of the word problem:

R = oranges and A = Apples

10R + 5A = 3.35
24R + 12A = 8.04

Maybe someone can show me the procedure and how to get the answer. It would be very appreciated. Thank you ahead of time.

unfortunately you cant work this out as the 2nd is just 2.4 times the 1st so they are basically the same equation

The two equiations you have come up with from the question are actually the same. The second one is the first one multiplied by 2.4. Therefore, you actually have one equation and 2 unknowns. I suggest re-reading the question carefully. If you find this is the only imformation available, you must solve this by trial and error (subbing in reandom values...ie. Oranges are $0.25, therefore apples must be $0.17)

I've never been good at following procedure on math problems. I always have weird ways of figuring them out. But if oranges are .25 and apples cost .17 it works out. I'm not sure how to show the work on it properly, but that's the answer.

10 x .25 = $2.50
5 x .17 = $0.85
---------
$3.35

24 x .25 = $6.00
12 x .17 = $2.04
---------
$8.04

Hope that helps!

well..I don't know if you realized this but the cost of apples and oranges is the same so I think that all you need to do is take 3.35 divided by 15 and you get about .22 (.22333333333333 to be exact) and so it would be about 22 cents each..I hope I helped and I think that is the right answer..Good Luck!!

10R + 5A = 3.35
Divide both sides by 5
2R + A = 0.67 (1)

24R + 12A = 8.04
Divide both sides by 12
2R + A = 0.67 (2)

You are dealing with same equation as is clear from (1) and (2).
Still you can have values like a chart
A = 0.07, B = 0.30
A = 0.17, B = 0.25
and so on
