I find it to be normal to have a phobia about going to the dentist. I would bet that it is one of the most common phobias. Who wants to be laying in a chair with their mouth stretched opened beyond normal while a stranger pokes at your teeth and gums? Well, it really isn't that bad. The longer you avoid the dentist, the worse your anxiety becomes. Even though you brush three times a day, you may have other problems. And the longer you avoid the dentist, the worse those problems may become.
Here's my advice...go talk to your dentist about your fears. Don't talk to him or her in the dentist chair. Talk in the office. See how you feel. If you don't feel as though they care, then find a dentist who does. My dentists know of my phobia and take breaks while working on me as per my request. They bring a fan in the room to keep me cool. A wet rag on my forehead. And I continue to breathe deeply to relax. The appointment is over before I know it. I have gone from avoiding them for over 5 years to now getting my regular 6 month cleanings. I too felt that my teeth were perfect but have had my fillings changed and even a root canal. I still get anxious before the visits, but I know that sooner I take care of it then sooner it will be over.
Remember, you are not the only one that feels scared. If you didn't have hesitation to someone poking in your mouth with metal objects then I would find you strange. But this is an easy one to overcome. When you are done with your appointment I guarantee that you will realize that the stress and anxiety of avoiding the dentist was more painful than the actual appointment.
I am not a dentist. Nor do I play one on T.V.
I suffer from agoraphobia. I live within a 20 mile radius that at one time was down to only one mile. The distance is getting larger. The dentist is a phobia that I have taken over. The bridges, heights, flying, distances, and all the others are being worked on.

I have no phobias that I know of. My twin sister, however, is terrified by sharks. You can't even say the word "shark" without seeing her shudder. If she sees a picture or a commercial with one, she screams and throws whatever is in her hands, and begins to hyperventilate. She hates shark week on discovery channel, and right now, there are a few commercials out on other stations, too, that have sharks in the very first scene so she has no way to know that they're coming. I feel sorry for her. If you put her in a room and closed the door with a shark picture on the back of it, she would never get out. She can't even watch the movie "Shark Tale" because the cartoon sharks scare her. By the way, we live in Missouri.
And I have a cousin who is terrified of butterflies, but I don't any details about it, because I'm not supposed to know. :)

I use to be terrified of the dentist to the point I would shake uncontrollably in the chair that the attached light would shake as well. Some how, I got over that fear.

UGH they are soooo discusting!!! ewwww just the thought makes me cringe. my own feet, i do not mind what so ever but man if someone else puts there bare foot on me i totally freak out, usually by crying and swinging my arms. it's a horrid thing, because all my friends know it and they tease me with it. i for one, do not find it funny. so yes, sadly, i have a strong phobia of feet.

I'm terribly scared of illnesses... I can't listen to a medical show without starting to feel my pressure drop and become really anxious. The same happened to me in my biology class... it sucks.

I'm scared of the dentist...
Not his tools, just the dentist. He yells at all his patients if they have bad teeth, even kids. He scared me when I was a kid, so now when I pass a dentistry, I freeze in terror.
