I am installing a new hard drive on my Compaq evo desktop. My question is with the master and slave jumpers and ribbon cables? I want to hook up 2 hard drives and two CD/DVD drives. Right now I have it working with both jumper settings on the hard drives to MASTER. Since they are on the primary and secondary slots, it works fine. I want to put the two other cd/DVD drives on now and I am having problems. Can anyone tell me the best way to jumper set thios configuration?

This depends on your cables. If you were using Master and SLAVE before, then each cable should have one master and one slave. The other cable was using one master and one slave.

But if you use CABLE SELECT on one of the cables, then both drives on that cable must be set to Cable Select.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

set master hard drive as master add slave cd rom
set secondary hd as slave and dvd rom as master
if you have a dvd burner you do not want to cd drives on the same cable as this can cause data loss

As long as you have 1 master and 1 slave on each cable. you should be okay.

You can set 1 cd-drive to master and 1 cd-drive to slave if they're connected via the same cable.

Do the same with your hard drives.

care must be taken when mixing and matching hard drives and cdroms (especially cdrw drives) on master/slave primary/secondary controller channels. It's probably best, in a two cdrom, two hard drive system, to keep the hard drives as masters on seperate channels, and the cdroms (cdrw's) on slave seperate channels. Then again, sometimes not, it depends on how you use the drives. The most used drives should be on seperate channels. Whith CDRW's you should keep the cdrw on a seperate channel from the hard drive it would read from.

Two options. Unhook the ribbon cable to the floppy drive, do you really use it? If you do, then take out the standard CD-ROM and put in the CD burner. The CD burner reads disk like a CD ROM, so why have two devices that do the same thing?

Put the optical drives back in how you got them out. Put the hard drives on the other cable and set them to cable select.
