All of the above names were great but also let's not forget "Bulldog" Hershiser who of course looked nothing like the name Lasorda gave him.

Also don't forget the

Well, "The Babe" is probably the one name best associated with ANY sport, so that would be it.

Some names just sound like they should be stars - like Mickey Mantle or Willie Stargell.

It's interesting that in the old days, it was pretty common to have nicknames for players that would be considered incredibly rude today. Like Three-Finger Brown, who actually had lost 2 fingers in a farming accident when a kid. Or a few players nicknamed "Rube" because they were ignorant country bumpkins.

My favorite real baseball name was Van Lingel Mungo, just because it is such an unbelievably strange name.

and BTW, Catfish Hunter (great nickname, great player, great man) wasn't given that name by his dad but byCharlie Finley, the owner of the A's, in order to add some character to a quiet player. He even made up a story for Hunter to tell people about when he was a kid and used to miss dinner because he was out fishing all the time.

I like "Charlie Hustle" for Pete Rose.

He was my favorite player, but I'm very disappointed with the way he has handled himself since he was banned from baseball.

Whitey Ford gave Rose the nickname when the Yankee pitcher saw Rose run to first base after drawing a walk in a spring training game.

Whether Pete went 4 for 4, or stuck out five times, he always gave 110% and was well worth the price of a ticket.

Of course this is subjective.....but I think in the 19th and early 20th century the nicknames may have been the best. Among my favorites are Mike "King" Kelly, Robert "Death To Flying Things" Ferguson, Charles "Piano Legs" Hickman, Fred "Crazy" Schmit and Bill "Wagon Tongue" Keister. More recently, the best are Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, Razor Shines, minor leaguer Pork Chop Pough and BillSpaceman" Lee

I definetly think that Rollie Fingers is the most catchy baseball name. He was a Relief Pitcher for the San Diego Padres and Oakland Atheletics. He many times won the Rawlings Relief Award for his outstanding closing pitching.
