The idea is that the people in the book think they're living in a utopia, but the readers are so appalled by the loss of freedom, expression, and personal thought and choice that they see it as a dystopia. Whereas the culture may have been "easy" to live in except for The Giver and Reciever, we are to see that it is not a good solution to societies current problems.
In high school, you should read Brave New World. It is much more adult than The Giver, but offers a similar, "we've solved societies problems, isn't this great?" when really all creation, freedom and love are horridly squashed. Both are books I love.

While The Giver is a good read when it comes to understanding our culture better, their ways of solving problems is a little odd. The beggining was an interesting change to the books that I've been reading, but it seems that the further I read, the less intrest I kept.
I was highly dissapointed with the ending. While not giving any spoilers, I will say that is was just screaming 'I wan't finished' to me.
While the author was able to solve some problems, the world never was a utopia to me. Then again, any world they allow individualality is going to have some problems. I got from it that if there is a utopia, it is meant to be flawed.
But yes, it was quite the read.

I think it is a great, it's wonderful book and I wonder why we don't have a society like that. Because, in the world, so people just shouldn't have kids. But, I don't like how they got rid of people, they make people think those people are going to a better place. Although, that book does bother me a lot how they control what everyone's thinking and doing. But, I do love that book.
