i would suggest reading The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time & the Texture of Relality by Brian Green(e). great book and a relatively easy read (so long as you have some basic understanding of physics)...he is a string theorist / physist

The string theory is mainly the theory that there are particles called strings smaller than the common sub-atomic particles. It also explains how the large and small parts of the Universe are the same.
Every once in a while PBS will run a set of NOVAs about string theory.

Instead of matter consisting of particles, points in the space time continuum, they are actually strings. Or so string theory says. These strings may even be loops. String theory does not explain everything and this theory has to be combined with others like supergravity and p-branes. The best book I have seen on the topic is Dr. Stephen Hawking's' "The Universe in a Nutshell", the sequel to his "Brief History of Time".

11 dimensional string theory has not produced anything.
It is possible that the 7 dimensions of space that are not perceived are mathematical deception, and therefore string theory is a theory of nothing, as you will find if you read the wikipedia article on string theory all the way to the end.

Basicaly what string theory is going too is the fact that we are all made up of massless particals that group together to form what we think of as mass but is really just pure energy so compact that it looks massive. That is what I believe is ment by string theory.

The jist of it is that all the properties of the Universe are made from a smaller-than-quantum thread...even space itself. Varied vibrations in this thread will result in all the known quantum particles...making this thread the sole building block of EVERYTHING in the universe. It is said to exist in a 10 dimensional space...with 6 of the 10 dimensions being compressed and folded into an entity too small to measure in the 4 dimensions of space and time.

Instead of particles think of osscillations or vibrations. Each vibration has a unique frequency (how fast it is vibrating) this unique frequency gives it its unique characteristics such as atomic weight, spin, energy etc.

It's about particles htat are even smaller than quarks. It is kinda like how the world is based on string. At least that's wat my friend told me.
