Never walk around in just your socks. They won't get so dirty if you always wear your shoes. Once they have that grimy look, there really isn't much you can do, especially if bleach or pre-soaks haven't cured the problem.

Okay, the ugly truth-- Your shoes and/ or floor may actually be the problem. You can wash your socks perfectly, and then wear them on old carpet or dusty hardwood, and it won't matter. Are there black foot outlines in your shoes?

The way I wash white cotton things is this, from Heloise.
Wash in hot wash/cold rinse with only detergent. Then run the washer again using cold wash/cold rinse with a cup of bleach. Also, the sun has more whitening power than any detergent, and I miss my clothesline.

Hot water + Oxi clean + dirty socks. Stand for at lease 1 Hr. Then wash them. You'll see the big difference.
Good Luck!!

My husband always has dingy socks, so when I wash them I wrise them out in cold water first, to remove all loose dirt, then put them in hot water with soap and bleach, let them set over night and wash as usual, they come out bright white, even if they have been thru the dryer

i personally have given up on it,,,,,, socks are not that expensive, so when they get that dirty look that will not wash out,,, i keep those for around the house wearing, buy new ones for going out,,,,,,, when the around the house ones get too bad, i toss them in a bag for use as cleaning rags,,,,,, to me buying new ones is cheaper and less stressful then all the washing in hot water with detergent and bleaches, striving for the white look

Pretreat them with Shout. Let soak in water and and detergent in the sink or a tub for 20 minutes. Then run them through a wash cycle in the machine and add Blueing.

To keep white socks white, wash in hot water and a little bleach. How are your socks getting ruined?Do you walk around in sock feet?Or are you shoes soiled on the inside? If they are soiled on the inside----replace them.If they are sneakers(white) then wash them with towels, that will clean them. And then make sure that you have clean feet when you put on your socks, and never walk around in them.....

Try adding 1 cup of baking soda with your laundry soap, and add your bleach 5 min. after the wash cycle begins. If this does not help you should mop the floors with proper cleaner for that surface and get your carpets cleaned.

Use bleach...or turn them in side out and wear them. If that does satisfy you, invest in those sock with the "stopper" or no "slide" grip things.
