Washinton is a city that is not in a state, it is in District of Columbia. District of Columbia is not a state, however, there is often talk concerning making the District of Columbia a state. This state would be a state with a single municipality, the City of Washington.

It's in no man's land.

The District of Columbia and the city of Washington are coextensive and are governed by a single municipal government, so for most practical purposes they are considered to be the same entity, though this was not always the case. As late as 1871, when Georgetown ceased to be a separate city, there were multiple jurisdictions within the District. Although there is a municipal government and a mayor, Congress has the supreme authority over the city and district, which results in citizens having a different status and less representation in government than residents of the states.

Washington DC is technically Washington, District of Columbia, even yet it somewhat isn't any longer referred to as as the two Washington D.C. or D.C., because it somewhat is the only city interior the District of Columbia. The District of Columbia isn't part of any state, even yet it somewhat is a federal district that borders Maryland to the north, east and west and borders Virginia to the south. The White domicile, and maximum different federal government homes (different than close by places of work), are located in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is not in a state. Nor can it be a state because it is the country's capital and because of the federal government.

It is surrounded by Maryland and Virginia. "After 1847, the remaining land that formed the area now known as the District of Columbia was formed exclusively from land that once belonged to Maryland."
