I am connected to my home network, whose external IP at the moment is 172.142.96.208, but one of my computers is saying it is 68. something. I am not able to connect to the internet. How can I fix this?

If you've got a natting router then all your PCs will be hiding behind your router with different IP adresses from the one that your router has for the outside world. (NAT = Network Address Translation)

Do your other computers connect?

What IP addresses do they have?

Are they 68.x.x.x network too or are they 172.x.x.x addresses? If you've got natting then I would expect them to be 192.168.x.x sort of addresses... unless your kit was changed from the default setup

I've seen 68.x.x.x when I was using a wifi connected PC that hadn't succeeded in connecting. If it's wifi, try rebooting your PC or stopping / starting the wifi.

If it's not wifi... and the address is the same range as your other PCs then it's likely to be a problem on your PC not the router.

keith is right your router and or modem need to be powered of then back on after a few seconds. however the same effect can often be achieved by going to my network connections (reach by either going through my network place or by control panel). then disable your eternet or wireless however you are connected then wait a few seconds the enable the connection again.
the software solution is better if you have more than one computer on a router as it does not affect other users connections. resetting (turning the router/modem off then on has the same effect on all users).
the IP address you see for each connection is normally assigned by your DHCP server (your router). each computer on your network has three IP addresses normally.
a windows based syustem will be 127.0.0.1 the computer it self.
then you have the IP address assigned by your modem or router typicaly 192.168.2.1 for your router with network computers starting to pool above this (first computer 192.168.2.2) in the case of a modem the ip address is typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
and of course you have the IP address of your ISP in your example 172.142.96.208.

the default gateway should be the same on each computer the default gateway is your router or your modem it will be one or the other depending on your network. if you have a router connected to a modem the router is the gateway (i seem to recall though i use a router with built in modem).

so to fix it repair the network as i stated at the start of this answer. if that fails then you will have to re-start the modem and or router.

Sounds like your router just needs to be powercycled (power on/off) same with modem.. Or try going into command prompt and ipconfig -release and ipconfig -renew.. Then make sure auto DHCP and DNS is turned on, on your router. And make sure auto obtain ip address is set in your tcp/ip properties for the connection on the machine not working.. Sounds like static ip is set for some reason on the machine that is not working..

unplug your modem for no less than quite a few hours, probable an afternoon. you should loose your cutting-edge IP handle for no less than a million hour, then desire the ISP assigns it to somebody else. Then your exterior IP handle will exchange.
