six days ago,i got my new cell phone and we were celebrating new years, when i went to the bathroom to change my clothes, but then somebody was knocking at the door, with the rush,i came out and left my cell there. When i remembered,i went to get it,it wasn't there. The guy who came in was my son's friend, after a while,he was searched, but aparently he gave it to his girlfriend.I was tolded that i should go to the cops,but...that isn't me.I rather tell my son to buy me another cell (he was his friend)i don't know, help me out.

first of all, I think it was wise of you to not call the cops because it's someone you know well, second, I think it's best if you just ask your son to invite over his friend to talk to him as a mother. tell him what he did was wrong & that you know he did it , you have to confront him & make him feel guilty about what he did, so that he doesn't do it later on or even influence your son to steal. Asking your son to get you another one is a bad idea because why should you punish him for something he didn't do? it wasn't his fault & he didn't have anything to do with it.
Be the bigger person here & get yourself another cellphone after talking to his friend.
& next time, make sure you have all your belongings next to you.

So you know who has the phone, right? Call the phone, using a land line, explain the situation and request the phone back. You can argue that the fact you knew the number means you are the owner of the phone. If she refuses, tell her you will have no choice but to report it stolen, and her boyfriend will be in trouble.

Why would you tell your son to buy you a new cell phone? He didn't steal it.
If you are so inclined to retreive your item them file a police report. Hold the person who stole the phone accountable.
