If you care for or respect the person you are saying "no" to, you will always feel the need to justify it, and it's perfectly ok to do so, as long as you are confident and telling the truth. Don't just make up an excuse, that's how you lose confidence (and friends) in the long run.

I still can't say no without feeling guilty. I just recently learned how to use the word, now if I could just get rid of the guilt I'll be okay.

Yes, then again I am pushing 50. When I was younger it was harder to say no. I have noticed that women in general have a harder time saying no because we are expected to be people pleasers by society. When we get older it gets easier because we develop a stronger sense of identity and more of a backbone.

Finally, yes.
I feel fine saying 'no' without justification. I offer an explanation (maybe) as a kindness to my requester, not a justification for my response.

only when speaking to my kids. I say no to them all the time. But when someone asks for something that I really would rather not do, I usually end up doing it out of guilt. I am a sucker that way !!

It depends on what i'm saying no to. Most of the time I feel like I should give a reason though.
