My friends went to New Jersey in the USA recently and everyone there had never heard a Scottish accent apart from Willie in the Simpsons.
And they all asked her if Scotland has electricity yet?!
Were they just stupid or are all Americans like that?

We think you all are exactly like Fat Bastard. "Get in my belly!"

We think that Scots do nothing but wear kilts, pinch pennies, and go around playing bagpipes and eating haggis while chasing legendary lake monsters all day.

In Scotland, nobody works or goes to school or drives or goes shopping or does anything routine like the rest of the world; all they ever do in Scotland is wear kilts, pinch pennies, and go around playing bagpipes and eating haggis while chasing legendary lake monsters all day. That is all that Scots do! Nothing else! Just going around wearing kilts, pinching pennies, and playing bagpipes and eating haggis while chasing legendary lake monsters alll day!

Well, okay, that's not ALL they do! Occasionally, they will pause for a few hours to watch "Wuthering Heights" at the cinema. But the projectionist is English, because all the Scots are busy going around wearing kilts, pinching pennies, and playing bagpipes and eating haggis while chasing legendary lake monsters all day!

lol..... I think those Americans were acting stupid. It sounds like they might have been mocking your friends. Either that, or those Americans really WERE stupid. I don't know anyone here who is that dumb.

When I think of Scotland I imagine a place with beautiful, lush scenery and people with awesome accents! And yes, I do realize that there are many different Scottish accents. (In high school, I knew two foreign-exchange students from Scotland. Their accents were completely different from each other). I've never tried haggis though. So I don't know whether or not I like that food.

edit: I just realized that "lol" could be taken the wrong way. Just to let you know, I was laughing because I can just imagine some American asking a dumb question about electricity in Scotland. I wasn't laughing at you. :)

They were just stupid. Don't judge all Americans by the actions of a few--and certainly not people from New Jersey! Egads!

A lot of Americans know of other countries only from things they see in movies. Since most movies that that place in Scotland also portray the 19th century and earlier, people come to the erroneous conclusion that Scotland is still stuck in the 19th century. (Nothing could be further than the truth, I know! Several family members have visited Scotland. They absolutely loved it.)

Most Americans, however, are not completely brain-dead and know that the movies are not an accurate depiction of life anytime, anywhere. I hope your friend's opinion of Americans was not too horribly tarnished by her brush with a few stupid ones.

I think Scotland is like England in a sense. I think of its rolling hills and old castles. I watched a special a few years ago on Scotland's haunted castles. I also think of the history with the wars between England and that kind of stuff. It's a normal place, really.

Oh, yeah, some Americans are that stupid. But, not all are. Americans make me angry because they know nothing about other countries.

I've never been there, but I am visiting this summer. It appears to be a beautiful place and the Scottish just seem to exude musical talent. I would say that yes, the people from New Jersey are in fact stupid and not all Americans are like that.

I have never been to Scotland, although I have traveled extensively. I would love to go someday. And no, not all Americans are so stupid as to think that you don't have electricity. That really embarrasses me. Have a great day, and Happy New Year.

They might be stupid or just arrogant, it's hard to tell without being there. Scotland isn't (to my knowledge) a country that pushes buttons or does anything to gain notoriety. It's not a bad thing that most Americans don't know much about your country, because we know who was voted off American Idol and whatever the media wants us to know. I don't speak for all Americans (because I'm sure there are some who are proud to be dumb arrogant *** holes), but I apologize on the behalf of those jerks/idiots who made those comments, and no, we are not all like that. With all that being said, I also don't know much about Scotland. You are kind of like that 2nd cousin that you know exists and you see him at the family reunion but he keeps to himself.

It's beautiful let alone rich in history. I want to return someday to play golf, drink fine ales, tour ancient castles, enjoy traditional music, etc.

They were just stupid.

I'd love to go. I'd even try a bite of haggis, just to say I had.
