Because Ford was a good president. I am not American, but I can recognise the good that he did.

Ford signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, which established special education throughout the United States. Ford expressed "strong support for full educational opportunities for our handicapped children".

He pulled the US out of Vietnam (the 70's War in Iraq).

He unified the US in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

He thawed very cold relations with both China and Russia, signing strategic arms treaties with both places.

And lastly, Canada remembers him because it was Ford who helped Canada gain admission into the G7.

No there is a valid point here staring legal Americans in the face! Every worthless branch of government is using these events to extend their holiday time off with pay! People who work for the government that are supposed to have public service as their main function, an event like this justifies in their minds taking advantage of the public pig slop free ride money troth they ride into a secure retirement mostly evading and NOT answering phone calls from the very same public they are supposed to be serving etc. The Ford family deserves a respectful funeral , but the rest of of government needs to start performing & producing , the post office taking 01/02/2007 off is nothing short of ridiculous!

All Presidents of the United States receive a State Funeral to honor them for the their time of service. It is all about honor and respect for the Presidents that have served our country. Ford is so unique - as he became VP and President without being voted into office. He put an end to the Vietnam war, which is obviously a huge deal.

One of the reason might be collective guilt by the media the short time he was president he was savage by them.
He was basically called a clumsy dufus even though he was a star athlete and turn down the NFL to go to law school, if you look at all republican presidents doe anyone notice a pattern by the media?

Somehow it is tied into getting our minds off of the war and all the soldiers that we are losing daily. I think the tenacles of Bloody George Bush reach into every aspect of the media.

I ask myself that question as well. Not in the context that we should do this for every soldier, but I remember when Reagan died and a little about when Nixon died and I don't remember the Post Office closing. It seem s a little strange to me...

Ford was a President although he didn't do too much. I don't know why his this is lasting so long. I would think that he's getting awful stinky about now. Just put him to rest and bury the poor guy.
